Undermining Democracy: San Jose's Controversial Decision to Bypass Community Input

This week was a bad week for San Jose and for democracy. Despite pushback from Councilmembers Batra and Doan, the Mayor rammed through a proposal to bypass community input by ensuring that progress on the city-sanctioned encampments experiment is no longer reviewed at regular city council meetings. With this, he closed the only avenue the community had for input. The decision as to which San Jose neighborhood would be subject experimentation is now in the hands of three city employees (Director of public works: Matt Loesch; Housing Director: Erik Solivan; Deputy City Manager: Omar Passons).

You can find the link to the video of the city council meeting where this happened on June 18 2024 below (Start at 7:55) https://sanjoseca.new.swagit.com/videos/308330
